What is Autism?

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

Autism, which used to be known as "infantile autism" or "childhood schizophrenia," was first identified in 1943 by Dr. Leo Kanner and has become the fastest-growing developmental disability in Texas, with 1 in 68 children affected. The following are autism programs for kids in Texas:

4 Programs For Autism

01

ABA Therpay

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy uses principles of learning that apply to everyone regardless of where they live or their income level. ABA therapy is an intensive, one-on-one form of therapy that addresses all areas within the autistic child's life to learn to function in society. It focuses on rewarding positive behaviors such as smiling, communicating, playing, reinforcing desirable actions, encouraging appropriate behaviors, modeling/shaping, reducing behaviors that can be harmful, and teaching problem-solving techniques. ABA therapy is one of the most common and effective autism therapies. It helps kids learn how to communicate and interact with others. ABA therapy also helps kids learn new skills and behaviors. Check out our article to learn more on How ABA Therapy Works.

02

Early Intervention Program

An Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention program (EIBI) consists of 30 or more hours per week of therapy. This comprehensive therapy provides every aspect needed for individuals with autism. Enrollment in an early intervention program often results in improved learning skills, verbal communication skills, decreased self-injury behaviors, fewer tantrums, increased socialization skills, and increased independence. These children are also less likely to be on medication and better prepared for their future before reaching school age. Check out our article to learn What Are Some of the Benefits of Early Intervention.

03

Caregiver and Family Training

Family training is important to help the caregiver succeed when working with a child on the spectrum. Caregivers need to learn how to effectively communicate with their autistic loved ones, manage difficult behaviors, and understand the disorder itself. Training can provide caregivers with the skills they need to better care for their loved ones and give them resources that will help them in their everyday lives. Parent Education Groups

Parent educational groups such as Autism Parent Support of Southwest Texas, Inc., run by Tracy Hahn, aim to help support families dealing with the challenges that children on the spectrum bring into their lives. They guide parents through understanding their child's diagnosis more deeply and can assist in building awareness of community resources and services. Parents gain education about the disorder and work together to establish a home-based action plan. It provides emotional support, strengthens coping skills, and helps parents learn strategies to make life easier at home for the entire family.
